Alaska has been inhabited for many thousands of years, and the lands that I live in, depend on, and am inspired by are layered with experience. In Alaska Place Names Illustrated, the process of painting prompts an intimate observation of an environment’s physical attributes. Inquiries into the naming histories promote a deeper understanding of Alaska’s cultural landscapes. Created in solidarity with those working to help Indigenous languages, traditions, and lifestyles thrive, I invite you to peruse this growing collection and consider the significance of place names in Alaska and beyond.
